Creative photography genres
Creative photography is a great way for photographers to learn new skills, to try out new artistic ideas and to bring passion back into their photography. Where a photographer is consistently shooting the same or similar photographs from the same genre, there is a risk that the photographer can lose passion for the craft. Creative photography projects can bring that passion back as it will bring in new ideas and shooting methods.
Each type of photography can be grouped into one of four major photography categories: Commercial, Creative, Portrait and Outdoor. This page covers the creative photography category of photography.

The genres of creativity
As shown above, there are so many genres that fall with the spectrum of creative photography. From abstracts to infrared and time lapse photography, there will be at lease one you can try that will help you expand your knowledge or inspire you to move further with your photography journey.
Creative photography ideas
Some ideas to try: Water droplet art, photograph reflections at the beach using a mirror, zoom in on raindrops as they form a puddle on the ground, create out-of-focus bokeh using fairy lights, apply two polarising filters to your lens and cross-polarise a shot to see the results, try macro photography, photograph the rainbow colours of soap bubbles on water, use a mirror to duplicate any scene, try glass ball photography, create and shoot light trails using a light stick or torch. There are so many creative ideas you can try out to help bring the passion back into your work.
Challenge yourself
The genre of creative photography is about challenging yourself by experimenting with light and trying new ideas and concepts that you otherwise wouldn’t have used in your everyday photography. Creative photography can be about breaking out of the rule of thirds and using others such as centred compositions, symmetry, framing, the golden ratio, using negative space and more.
The Introduction of creative elements
This genre of photography can involve as much digital photo manipulation as the photographer desires. It is about experimentation and inspiring creative thought processes rather than photographing a specific scene or object in the usual way.
In-camera settings such as slow shutter speed, under exposure or overexposure and nighttime long exposures can all provoke new and exciting ideas in photography. What can you do differently? Can you introduce elements into your shot that would create a story or adjust the lighting through adjusting exposure settings to create a specific mood or a dark or bright and positive emotion?
Who knows, ideas that flow from creative photography may influence your next photo shoot to be even more artistic than usual!
